Haircuts for a Cause

(New Haven-WTNH) – Local salon owners and a clinic helping children deal with trauma and abuse have launched a special program that is making a difference for kids throughout New Haven.

It is called K-Hair and it is helping to enhance a child’s outer appearance while building their self-esteem.

In this special partnership between the Community Health Network of Connecticut and the Clifford Beers Clinic. Young people who have experienced some type of trauma in their lives are paired with stylists who are committed to free monthly appointments for one year.

Organizers say, it is giving children from diverse backgrounds the attention and confidence they need.

“Mental health care and community health care is just as important as what happens in the body and so the idea is that we can take care of kids and help their self-esteem at times when that is most vulnerable,” said Jacqueline Buster from Community Health Network.

“I think more than anything what a child needs is a community and a place to belong. And I think that’s what K-Hair does for children,” said Alice Forrester from the Clifford Beers Clinic.
